Welcome to our Team's Homepage

Welcome to the Foundation Beyond Belief international team page
Looking for a team to join?
To find a local FBB team, you have three options:
1) When you register with Light The Night, on the first page select "join a team" and on the second page search for "FBB".
2) Press Ctrl + F and enter the two-letter abbreviation with a space after (e.g., "NC ") to find teams in your state on this page.
3) Select a team from our list of teams by state and province. The link will take you to that team's homepage and you can join from there.
To find a walker, press Ctrl + F and enter the person's name.
On Twitter? Use #FBBLTN to promote and share your thoughts about the project.
Want to form a new team?
Then, go here:
If you are in a U.S. or Canadian local group that is not near an LTN Walk, please contact Breanna Baer (Breanna.Baer@lls.org) and she will assign your group to a walk for which your group will be able to fundraise, but will not need to attend in person.
If you are in an international group outside the U.S/Canada that would like to create a fundraising team, please contact Breanna Baer (Breanna.Baer@lls.org) and she will help you create a team as part of our international "virtual team."
If you are not a part of a local group or live outside of the U.S. and Canada, you can still independently join the FBB team as a "virtual walker." Click here to join the FBB "virtual team."
About our team
Following a record-setting first year (highest non-corporate fundraising in LTN history), the 2013 FBB international team is again going to be a rallying point around which local freethought, atheist, and secular humanist groups will make teams to participate in Light the Night Walks. Our 2013 goal is to unite the Freethought Movement around the world to raise $500,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's evening walk and fundraising event to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Thousands of participants raise funds for vital, lifesaving research and patient services and, on these special nights, they carry illuminated balloons in a show of support from a caring community. One hundred and fifty teams participated around the US and Canada last year; we are hoping to increase our local walk teams from 150 to 200 in 2013.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society funds lifesaving research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and treatments for other types of cancer, such as chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue are providing drugs and procedures that are improving quality of life.
All walkers are encouraged to become Champions For Cures by raising $100 or more to help fight blood cancer. Walkers located in the US or Canada who raise $100 or more will receive night of walk benefits including:
- Light The Night t-shirt
- Light The Night balloon
- Wristband which entitles the walker to food and refreshments
Matching and incentives courtesy of Stiefel family and Stiefel Freethought Foundation
In addition, joining as a part of the FBB international team will highlight nontheist giving globally and raise awareness for local secular groups. To support this goal, the Stiefel family has pledged to match the first $250,000 we raise for LLS until December 31, 2013, including corporate matches! As an extra incentive for groups to get involved, the top fundraising teams will have the opportunity to direct up to $5,000 in grants with up to half going to a local qualifying freethought nonprofit and the rest to qualifying FBB Allies of their choice, courtesy of the Stiefel Freethought Foundation. To learn more about the incentive program, go to the LTN incentives page.
Don't forget about corporate matching
Matching gifts are a great way to watch your contributions grow. Do you have a matching gift program at your place of employment? Contact your human resources department to learn how to apply and receive these additional funds. Remind your donors as well! As mentioned above, the Stiefel family will match funds up to $250,000 including corporate matching. A $50 gift can become $100 at the local level with a 100% corporate match and then $200 at the national level when the combined total is matched by the Stiefel’s! Your effort to secure matching gifts from your company and encouraging your donors to do so too will MULTIPLY the impact on the LLS mission to support patients and find cures!
2013 Honored Hero
We have chosen Greta Christina as our Honored Hero for 2013. Greta is author of "Why Are You Atheists So Angry? 99 Things That Piss Off the Godless," and one of the most popular atheist bloggers. She is a regular atheist correspondent for AlterNet, Free Inquiry, and The Humanist, and writes at Greta Christina's Blog (now part of the Freethought Blogs network) since 2005. In 2012, Greta Christina was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She was fortunate in getting the cancer caught early: she was treated with surgical hysterectomy and oophorectomy, and is now cancer-free. She has a presumptive diagnosis of Lynch Syndrome (a diagnosis based on family history), which significantly increases the odds of getting certain kinds of cancers, including endometrial and colon. Although she does not have a blood cancer, drugs developed for blood cancers are often used to treat other cancers as well. As a result, the research that is funded by LLS could very well help treat endometrial and other cancers.
Over 20 Freethought groups supporting our effort!
We are being joined in our efforts by our Allies: American Atheists, American Humanist Association, American Ethical Union, Atheist Alliance of America, Camp Quest, Center For Inquiry, Centre for Inquiry Canada, Freedom From Religion Foundation, Harvard Humanist Chaplaincy & Alumni, Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, Recovering From Religion, Secular Student Alliance, Society for Humanistic Judaism, and United Coalition of Reason are encouraging their affiliates to form and join teams.
While they do not have local groups, the Richard Dawkins Foundation has been a wonderful supporter of our efforts. The Institute for Science and Human Values, James Randi Educational Foundation, Project Reason, Grief Beyond Belief, Secular Woman, Freethought Blogs, Secular Coalition for America, and Stiefel Freethought Foundation have also joined us as supporters.
In addition, we'd like to spotlight and thank Elyse Anders of Skepchick. Elyse is running an entire marathon as part of the Team in Training program to benefit LLS. All you have to do is donate $2.62 (that's 10 cents a mile) to help her reach her goal. Elyse herself is a cancer survivor and lost her stomach last year.
