Welcome to the TEP Community Action Team Light The Night Walk Team Fundraising Page! This year, we're walking in honor and support of TEP employee Tracy Bennett. Here's Tracy's story:

~~November 30th 2016 will forever be the day that changed my life.

I went to work in the morning, despite still not feeling well, and waited for my doctor to call me with my lab results to see if they revealed what might be wrong. For the past month, I’d had a wide array of crazy symptoms—the loss of vision in my right eye, raging headaches, shortness of breath and the occasional will-I-or-won’t-I-faint? moment.

Just before 10 a.m., a nurse at my doctor’s office calls and asks me to come in immediately. I wouldn’t say that’s necessarily the call I was hoping to get. But on the way over, I tell myself, “Whatever it is, I’ve got this and I’ll push through.”

When my doctor walks in, I could instantly tell he wasn’t his normal, happy self. “I don’t know what to tell you, kid. You have the signs of acute leukemia.” I was 46 years old.
I’m admitted to the hospital that same day. My white blood cells are off the charts, indicating my body is desperately trying to fight something. My mind doesn’t have time to process everything. I remember my only thought was, “OK, let’s fix this.”

My husband meets me at the hospital. A catheter is put in my neck so they can perform a two-hour dialysis on my blood. It’s as brutal as it sounds. The doctors come in and start explaining my cancer to me, but it all sounds like mumble jumble. I need blood and platelets and more dialysis and a PICC line in my arm for the IV meds. I get moved to the oncology floor and start the chemo process. I blow up like a balloon. I tell the nurses they are saving my life. It’s starting to sink in.

I’ve since survived multiple rounds of chemo, infections, horrendous fevers that make me feel like maybe I’m not strong enough for this, a bone marrow transplant (my brother was a 100-percent match!) the loss of my hair and the loss of my social life — the hardest part of this for me, honestly, was being isolated, a must since my immunity was so low. I have 4 kids and four grandkids. FaceTime is great, but I miss the hugs.

As I sit here on Day 68 past my transplant, it’s still a blur that I had cancer and have survived remarkably. I am here to tell my story to whoever needs it.

This will be the first year that I’ve walked in the Light the Night Walk. My employer, TEP, is walking in my honor. The company has done so much for me already. When I was in the hospital, they held blood drives. I needed blood all the time.

The doctors are very optimistic about my future. My prognosis is great. I have not looked at this as a terminal diagnosis for me; this is just another task in my book of travel for this life.

Thank you for your support!

"My sister Tracy, is such an inspiration. Throughout her journey she has been so strong, determined and focused. She helped me stay strong for her through her strength and determination. When Tracy was diagnosed it was such a shock to us as we had no family history of Leukemia at all but after reading up on it , it all started to make sense of why she had felt so bad for so long. I can not wait until she can go back to enjoying her life, she knows it will not be the same....we know it will be better. It has been such an experience to watch my sister go through and I hope her story will help others out there. I have to thank my brother Marty, as well. He was a perfect match for her stem cell transplant....10 out of 10 match...doesn't get any better than that! We love you Tracy and are so proud of you!"
