Walking in Honor

Every year, at Light The Night, we walk in honor of our youngest son, Peter, who is an early childhood leukemia survivor. We will be forever grateful for all the progress made in battling blood cancers. Peter is now a healthy 14-year-old because when he battled acute lymphoblastic leukemia from 1998 to 2002, his odds of beating the disease were over 90%. Thirty years earlier, his chances would have been less than 5%.

But more progress is needed to eradicate blood cancers and all cancers. Fortunately, much of the research funded by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is leading to breakthroughs, not just with blood cancers, but also with other cancers. For this reason, and because cancer is again making it personal, we will also be walking in honor of someone else this year. Drina’s cousin, Greg, is in the battle of his life against a very rare, very aggressive form of cancer that began in his sinus cavity and is likely the result of chemical exposure during his military tour in Vietnam. Greg is resilient, and we have a lot of family and friends praying and pulling for him. Here is a prayer Greg shared with us, from the Rev. DeWane Zimmerman. It speaks to what kind of person Greg is and it speaks to all of us.

“O Lord, this day is your gift to me, what I do with this day is my gift back to you.

As I begin this day, I center myself on you.

Let no ungenerous thought be in my mind today.

No intent that has bitterness in it.

No purpose that has harm in it.

Not only toward others, but toward myself.

To each one I meet this day,

let me be quick to speak a grateful word,

willing to hear a painful word,

eager to believe the best and forgive the worst.

Touch me, O God,

with sweet simplicity of this fresh new day,

and may gentleness and hope fill my heart.

Amen!

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Hundreds of thousands of participants raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services.

For more than 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been solely focused on people with blood cancers. Presently, we have more than $250 million committed to research across the United States and in ten other countries. Every dollar is provided by concerned donors. We invest in the best, outcome based science:

  • Anywhere, with no geographic or institutional boundaries
  • Without profit incentive
  • To meet unmet Medicare needs of people with blood cancers

And LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

  • A donation of $30 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
  • A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Please make a donation to support my participation in the Light The Night Walk and help save lives. Be sure to check my Web site frequently to see my progress, and thanks for your support!

"Dan, thank you for your inspiring words on your blog. It was a great reminder of how precious and fragile life is. We have all been affected by cancer in some way, watching friends, family, and co-workers battle it. Anger is a powerful emotion and I'm pissed as **** at cancer!!!! Thanks for all the devotion of you, Drina, and the kids to fight this disease."

"Bravi to the walking Ditzlers. I will always remember your struggle with Peter and the great outcome it had. We are looking for a similarly good outcome for my 80-year old sister. She is on her way. Keep up the good work. I have to believe it is making a difference. Jon & KT"
