Welcome to The 232's's Fundraising Page
Jul 18, 2017

I, along with my family and JJ Burns & Co, will be participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Soceity's (LLS) Light The Night Walk on Saturday, October 21st in honor and great memory of my father, James Burns.

My father was a Suffolk County Police officer, badge #232 (hence the team name). For many reasons, he was the person I admired most and was a hero to me. It was a spring day when he asked me to sit down because he had some papers to share with me. I thought it would be some financial paperwork he wanted me review, since that would happen on occassion. Instead, it was results of a blood test. When I looked at them, it hit me right in the gut. Cancer. I was overcome with so many emotions and began to feel helpless--it was one of the darkest moments in my life. However, it was also one of the most significant moments because it was then that I decided I was not going to allow Leukemia to define my dad, me, or our family.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) helped to support my family and my dad, along with countless other blood cancer patients and caregivers. With the help of LLS, he was able to survive, and even thrive. He saw the birth of all four of my children, celebrate many more St. Paddy’s days (as the Irishman he was), fish and clam on the water the way we did when I was a boy, take a father son trip to Vegas, and even rent an RV to drive south to pick up a cruise ship with the family. My kids, my wife and I are thankful for every day longer that we got to spend with him. In the end, he passed away in my arms.

I want to share the story of my dad to encourage all of us to bring light to the darkness of cancer. Let’s support each other, our loved ones, survivors, fighters, and remember those who are not with us. Most importantly, let’s support the great work LLS does for those we love at Light The Night.

I invite you to take a few minutes to watch this video to get a better sense of the impact LLS has on advancing cancer treatment. They invested over $21 million in this research team when it was most needed. The New York Times recently released an article announcing the FDA unanimously recommening approval for CAR-T immunotherapy - meaning that we are closer than ever to having this drug passed to be used as a standard treatment option.

This is a primary reason why you should give to LLS. Your efforts will continue to enable this significant treatment advancement, along with others. You can donate in one of the following ways:

  1. By clicking on the "Donate Now" button to the right and making a secure online donation
  2. By mailing a check, made payable to "LLS" to:
