Approximately every four minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer. On Monday March 9, 2009 I became one of those people. Approximately every ten minutes someone in the United States dies from a blood cancer.  In 2011 alone approximately 21,000 people died. Because of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) I am not one of those people. Leukemia is also the leading cancer in young children and we need to fight for them because kids can’t fight it alone.

I was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APML) one month after my 25th birthday. In the 1950’s AMPL was considered to have a 100% mortality rate with no form of treatment. It was considered one of the most feared of the leukemia’s, primarily because patients couldn’t survive the initial (induction) chemotherapy. Remarkably though if the patients were able to survive induction therapy many of them were cured. The progression in the discovery turned this disease from the most feared to the most curable and confirms how research can come together and save lives.

I have found that by participating in raising these critical research funds it gives me a sense of purpose out of all the uncertainty that comes with having a cancer diagnoses.  My participation with LLS continues to grow every year. Starting by walking in my first Light the Night Walk ® in 2009 7 months after being diagnosed, still going through treatment and bald! To most recently being a candidate in the LLS Man & Woman of the Year campaign from March 29 - June 7 2012. During those 10 weeks I raised a total of $19,500. I also received the first ever ‘Mission Focus’ award for the candidate who showed exemplary commitment to LLS’s mission throughout the campaign. Since my diagnosis in 2009 I have raised a total of $40,000 and counting.

I know firsthand how important this research is and if there weren’t people involved with organizations like LLS fifty years ago I know things would not be the same for me today. This is why I am so honored and passionate about being a part of LLS because I feel with each campaign I am involved in I am able to give back to others what was given to me, a future.

When The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk funds treatments that save lives, it's all due to people like you. Without your efforts LLS could not provide these lifesaving treatments. LLS really is making cures happen with your help.

Friends, families and co-workers form fundraising teams and millions of consumers help by donating at retail outlets. These efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in over two hundred communities each fall across North America.

Please join our team's effort today by registering to walk or by making a donation. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will save lives today. Be sure to check our team Web site frequently to see our progress, and thanks for your support! Please make a donation and check my Web site frequently to see my progress.

Thank you for bringing us all closer to living in a world without blood cancers!
