Welcome to my Light The Night Walk homepage!

My name is Madilyn Bottrell. I'm four years old. This is my second year walking in the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk with my friends. We're Team Megan's Hero in honor of Megan's dad and Jackie's brother, James.

My mom thought I was finally old enough to walk at Light the Night for the first time last year (2012). We spent many weeks collecting bottles & cans to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. We also asked friends, family & coworkers to help us reach our fundraising goal. The Light The Night Walk last year was great. Our team was one of the top fundraising teams. I loved the music and illuminated balloons so much that I'm doing it again this year. Plus there are lots of sick people who still need help.

I understand that raising money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society helps people who are sick, although I don't understand what cancer is yet. My mom tells me that one of her classmates had Leukemia, a blood cancer, when she started medical school. She joined the marrow registry hoping to be a marrow match for him and be his cure for cancer, but sadly a match was never found and he died at only 23 years old.

Then just a month before I was born, my great uncle Mark died of leukemia too. My great uncle loved to sail boats and was a fisherman. He used to bring fresh lobsters to my family when he’d visit. In the hopes of helping other people beat blood cancers & diseases, when I was born my parents donated my cord blood to the marrow registry. And as homage to my great uncle, I dressed as a lobster for my first Halloween costume. It was the best costume ever and earned me the nickname Lobster Baby. Now I'm known as Lobster Toddler or Lobster Tot. Everyone loved that costume and people still talk about it today.

In a way I was born to help beat cancer. Help me help everyone who’s fighting cancer. Please spread the word, and support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Thanks for your support!

Love,

Madilyn

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Hundreds of thousands of participants raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services.

For more than 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been solely focused on people with blood cancers. Presently, we have more than $250 million committed to research across the United States and in ten other countries. Every dollar is provided by concerned donors. We invest in the best, outcome based science:

  • Anywhere, with no geographic or institutional boundaries
  • Without profit incentive
  • To meet unmet Medicare needs of people with blood cancers

And LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

  • A donation of $30 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
  • A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Please make a donation to support my participation in the Light The Night Walk and help save lives. Be sure to check my Web site frequently to see my progress, and thanks for your support!
