As many of you already know, in July 2007 our world was tragically ripped apart when we lost our 22 year old daughter Michelle to complications of Leukemia. She had just returned home for the summer from her 4th year of college and couldn't shake the fatigue and dizziness she was experiencing. Tests revealed our worst nightmare...leukemia.
Michelle was admitted into Lacks Cancer Center where she immediately underwent a series of intensive chemotherapy on her immune compromised body. We feared the harmful side effects that could damage her young body, she feared her future. How could her schooling continue with such a debilitating disease, could she bear children, she would need to put her life on hold for at least 3 years. What we didn't realize was that in just 38 days from when she was admitted...Michelle would be dead. One moment she was planning her life and career...then less than six weeks later we would be planning her funeral and picking out her casket. She never got to say goodbye, never graduated from college, never married her high school sweetheart of 7 years, or had children...and never beat her leukemia.
While Michelle was in the hospital she mentioned when she felt better she wanted to help by volunteering or becoming a mentor with the society to help others who needed it...especially young children. That was Michelle, always thinking of others first. Since she no longer can we have vowed to make this our passion so other parents or families will not experience the devastating tragedy we have.
On October 1, 2011 our team "Shellbells" is participating once again in "The Light the Night" nationwide walk to raise awareness and funds to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. We participate in the walk in honor of all individuals who are currently battling or who have lost their lives to blood cancers. Our local chapter is holding the walk in downtown Grand Rapids this year and we plan on doing our part.
Here's why we need your help. Our team is in need of people to sponsor us by making a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society so we can do our part to CURE blood cancers! Your generous contribution will not only help fund more research so less debilitating treatments can be discovered for patients and with much higher success rates but will also help struggling families with uncovered medical expenses. By contributing you will be helping deliver the hope that future generations will not have to endure cancer threatening the lives of their friends and family. You have the power to fight back against a disease that affects millions. We really need your help.
Please make a donation to support my team's participation in the Light The Night Walk and help save lives. WE NEED A CURE...PLEASE HELP US!!!
Contributions can be made by either mailing a check to us, or by making an secured online credit card payment. All contributions are 100 % tax deductible. To pay by check please make payable to: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and mail to:
