Last October I had wonderful news to tell. Doug Jrs cancer had gone into remission. It was amazing. Doug was back to work by January. Life was looking good.
In June 2009, we were told the tumor was back. The tumor is not reacting to the traditional chemotherapy, so he cannot do a self stem cell transplant (a highly successful procedure). It is too aggressive, so there is not enough time to find a bone marrow donor that matches. On October 6, his Dad will donate his bone marrow. They are not a perfect match; they are a haplo (one-half) match. The risk of rejection with a non-perfect match is much greater than with a perfect match. However, everyday things are changing. The Doctors will be trying a new treatment that has had promising results when the half-match is a first degree relative (Dad, Mom, Child or sibling).
Research, such as the kinds funded by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, makes it possible to try procedures such as the one to be used for Doug, Jr.
Please make a donation to support our participation in the Light The Night Walk and help save lives. I know it is difficult times now. I am not asking for large donations ( I would not turn them down either), every amount counts.
Make sure you continue to check my site to hear of the progress Doug is making through this journey.
October 10 - Just finished the walk for Light the Night. Couldn't make it to Rockville, so I walked around John Hopkins. Do I get extra credit for all the stairs?
