Welcome to our Light The Night Walk Team homepage.
This is me, Danielle, last May 2011 and this is my cancer story.
This is my family
and my friends
most of them there that cold day when I went to the hospital for what I thought was an allergy attack…I was 25 and had just started my new job in Washington DC, but all of that came to a halt on January 8th 2011. After a few hours and a lot of tests the doctors told me that it was not allergies at all, but that my symptoms were being caused by a softball sized mass in my chest. So large it was leaning on my heart, lung, trachea and main vein pumping blood through the right side of my body. One risky biopsy later they found out it was Large B-Cell Lymphoma.
Ok so now what? Well now you find a doctor, check. Figure out your treatment, check. Get a bone marrow biopsy(ouch!) have a medical port inserted in your body and lots of other unpleasant poking, prodding and LOTS of needles!
Then the chemo starts, the first round was going to be 5 days of intense therapy in order to get the mass to a manageable size as quickly as possible. Lots of fluid, pills and 18 pounds gained in 2 days! Not a 25 year old girls dream to say the least! 2 weeks after the first treatment my hair started coming out, time to shave it and get a wig(as seen in photo above, not bad right?). 6 rounds of chemo, 4 months and hardly a setback the Petscan came back clear not one trace of Lymphoma left in my body. One year later I can proudly say I am still cancer free! I could not have done it without the people in the photos above, at times I think it was harder on them then me but they would never let me know that. I love you all and thank you for your support then and now!
So why do I support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society? Without this organization I would not have had the life saving medicines which are responsible for me being here today. I have faith that they are on a mission to wipe out blood cancers permanently and will absolutely accomplish that goal so that one day no one ever has to go through what I went through.
Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Hundreds of thousands of participants raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services.
And LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.
Please join our team's effort today by registering to walk or by making a donation. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will help save lives. Be sure to check our team Web site frequently to see our progress, and thanks for your support!
