Lance's Story:
Sep 21, 2010 by Scott Boyle and Kira O'Connor

I have participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night Walk for the past 9 years. The experience was completely different last year, when for the first time, I walked as a lymphoma survivor.

As I picked up my white “survivor” balloon after years of carrying a red “supporter” one, I was overcome with emotion. Up until that very moment, the events of that previous year had been surreal. But the winks and “thumbs up” from others carrying white balloons and the “high fives” from those carrying red ones made it all finally hit me. I was no longer a bystander; I was a part of this community. It was a cold, rainy, miserable night on the Brooklyn Bridge, but I walked in great spirits. Surrounded by my family and friends, we walked together in our bright, yellow Lymphomaniac shirts and I was thankful and full of joy, just to be alive.

Over the past year, we’ve seen new friends diagnosed with cancer and others who have lost their fights. This year we are walking to remember our friend, Margery Ablon, who recently lost her battle with lymphoma and melanoma. Though I had heard stories about Marge from her children for years, we finally met after my diagnosis in 2008. We became instant friends and I was motivated throughout my own treatment by her courage, optimism and sense of humor. She walked as a fellow Lymphomaniac at the 2009 LTN walk and also rang the opening bell with us at the NYSE (see link below). She will be in our thoughts as we walk this year.

Last year with your help, the Lymphomaniacs raised over $135,000. We were proud to be named the #2 Friends and Family Team and I was honored to be named the #1 Individual fundraiser in both the US and Canada.

This was an amazing accomplishment, but not one to just sit back and admire… Our fight is far from over.

Many blood cancers, including the form I have, are incurable. Though there have been enormous medical advances over the past 10 years, there is still no cure. The Lymphomaniacs won’t give up our fight until patients and their families can live without the fear of recurrence and precious lives are no longer lost to cancer.

This year, the Lymphomaniacs have ambitiously committed to raising $200,000. Please help us reach our goal by joining our team or making a donation. Every contribution counts and every dollar saves lives. The support from family and friends is what empowers people like me to face this disease.

Thank you for your continued support and generous spirit! I hope you know how much it means to me, my family, and the entire Leukemia and Lymphoma community.

Warm regards,

Lance
