The Stevens family will participate in the LLS's 'Light the Night' walk across the Brooklyn Bridge

Dear friends and family,
This November 14th will mark four years since Kate received a bone marrow transplant from her sister, Caroline.
While Kate (9) continues to do well and enjoys an active, ‘normal’ lifestyle as a fourth grader at Milton Elementary School in Rye, NY, it is the five year post-transplant milestone on which we remain focused. After November 2012, Kate will be considered a leukemia ‘survivor’ by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, and her risk of relapse will drop meaningfully to almost-normal levels. Again, we feel incredibly fortunate and hope that Kate’s extraordinary courage and spirit since her July 2007 diagnosis continue to serve as inspiration – as it has to us.
Kate is a member of the Rye Rampage travel soccer team, loves to swim and read, and plays the piano and viola. Kate’s siblings are all happy and well – and as devoted to Kate as ever. Caroline (8) is in the third grade, Charlie (6) is in kindergarten, and Jack (4) is in pre-school.
On Wednesday, October 5th – in three weeks, our family will participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s ‘Light the Night’ walk across the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC – as members of The Lymphomaniacs, a cure-cancer organization launched by family friend Lance Meyerowich, a lymphoma survivor.
Last October, through wind and rain, Kate, Caroline, Jennifer, The Lymphomaniacs, and I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and raised over $240,000 (!) – finishing as the #1 ‘Friends and Family’ team in NY and in the US. Of that total, we were able to raise over $25,000 and direct funds to a specific lab research project at Sloan-Kettering (through Dr. Nancy Kernan; Kate’s pediatric oncologist) – a rewarding opportunity to make a tangible difference on the front-line of cancer research.
This year, we are committed to raising $30,000. Please consider helping our team reach the goal by joining us on the walk (!) and/or making a donation. As mentioned, donations can catalyze and perpetuate promising cancer research. The survival rate for pediatric leukemia has tripled over the last 40 years, with the help of LLS’ research funding; however, leukemia remains the leading cause of cancer death among children and young adults.
Thank you very much for your continued support. It means so much to Kate, to us, and to all of those battling cancer.
Love,
Scot and Jennifer
