(Mike, Julie & Justin - March & May 2011)

Welcome to our Light The Night Walk homepage.

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Hundreds of thousands of participants raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services.

We're participating in the Walk in honor of all individuals who have had or are battling blood cancer, including Julie's 30 year old brother, Steve Preston. Steve was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in August of 2004 and he has been cancer free since March of 2005! Steve moved from Boston to New York City in March to accept a job at Peter Gluck and Partners. The firm is a perfect fit for him, because in addition to the design they also manage the construction of each project in-house. Half of the projects in the office are high-end residences, while the other half are non-profits, schools, affordable housing, etc. Steve is spending most of his time designing a house north of Chicago on Lake Michigan, which recently broke ground. Steve has been cancer free for six-and-a-half years now!

This is our 8th year participating in the Light the Night Walk, but this year will be slightly different. The Walk is the same day as our cousin's wedding, so we won't actually be "walking" at Angel Stadium this year. But since we are still passionate about this cause, we're going to get our walkers together on a different day (Saturday September 24th) to celebrate Steve, the LLS, and the others battling cancer. So help us honor and celebrate Steve as we fundraise in his honor again this year.

For more than 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been solely focused on people with blood cancers. Presently, we have more than $250 million committed to research across the United States and in ten other countries. Every dollar is provided by concerned donors. We invest in the best, outcome based science:

  • Anywhere, with no geographic or institutional boundaries
  • Without profit incentive
  • To meet unmet Medicare needs of people with blood cancers

And LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

  • A donation of $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
  • A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Please make a donation to support our participation in the Light The Night Walk and help save lives. Thanks for your support!

If you want to join our Team, "Walk This Way for Steve," and celebrate with us at our casual park get-together (Saturday September 24th), please send Julie an email.

If you would like to donate, please do one of the following:

1. Click on the radio buttons above to select an amount and click Donate. Please fill in all required information. Your donation will be logged under Julie as a walker. (You will donate via credit card)

OR

2. Make a check payable to "Leukemia & Lymphoma Society" and mail it to Mike & Julie by September 8, 2010.

We will turn in all money collected just before the walk.

Please email Julie if you have any questions. Thanks again! God Bless!
