A Message from Matt Luzunaris
Sep 12, 2011
Dear Earthquakes Fans,
I have really enjoyed my first year in San Jose. The community here supports the team with immense passion and immediately makes a player feel at home. During the 2011 season, I have done my best to interact with fans through charitable efforts, and I have been touched by a number of remarkable stories of perseverance and strength. I have also seen how this community rallies around each other and supports each other in difficult times.
I am writing today about a cause that has significant personal meaning for me. Unfortunately, cancer has been an ongoing part of my life. I lost my brother, Sean, to cancer 10 years ago and my girlfriend, Austen, is fighting non-Hodgkins Lymphoma for the third time.
With that in mind, the Earthquakes and I have formed a walk team for the annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Light The Night Walk on Oct. 15 in Palo Alto. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has done a great job raising money that goes directly to research for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. It is an incredibly worthwhile organization that I believe in.
Be it family, friends, co-workers or other acquaintances, we all know someone who has been affected by this disease. We have all seen the toll it can take on the individual who is sick, as well as their families. But with every dollar and every donation, we get one step closer to defeating the ugly “C” word.
For everyone that registers for the walk, you will have a chance to win two on-field seats for Oct. 22, two Earthquakes jerseys and a lunch with me.
Our goal is to reach at least $10,000 in donations for our walk team. Fans can contribute to our team by donating here. We really appreciate your support in helping us reach our goal and hope to see you in Palo Alto on Oct. 15.
Thanks and Go Quakes!
