Why We're Here
Aug 11, 2014 by Shelley A Anderson
Again this year, Dominion, along with employees, family and friends will be walking for team Dominion Kares for Katie. We walk and fundraise in honor of Katie and others who are fighting the battle of a blood cancer or who have already lost that battle.
The above picture of Katie, our team’s namesake, was taken just weeks before her diagnosis of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) in March of 2013. One moment she is our healthy vibrant teenager and the next we’re told she has cancer and is admitted to the hospital. She spent most of the following year in that hospital where she underwent several rounds of intensive chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and battled many life-threatening complications. The transplant initially killed the cancer cells, but only for a very brief period. Due to the very aggressive nature of her leukemia and to all of the other complications she endured, she lost her fight on March 16th of this year. We buried our Katie one day shy of a year from diagnosis.
Even when attached to multiple i/v lines and enduring treatments that wreaked havoc on an already distressed body, she did it with a smile and tremendous bravery. This was her life for the past year, however I choose to remember the picture above of Katie with arms wide open and embracing life as that is the lesson we should all take away from this.
My efforts couldn’t save Katie, but due to the generosity of people such as you, LLS will have the resources to develop critical treatment options that will prevent other children and their families from having to endure this nightmare.
Thank you for your support in helping to save lives!

Welcome to our Light The Night Walk Team Fundraising Page
When The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk funds treatments that save lives, it's all due to people like you. Without your efforts LLS could not provide these lifesaving treatments. LLS really is making cures happen with your help.
Friends, families and co-workers form fundraising teams and millions of consumers help by donating at retail outlets. These efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in over two hundred communities each fall across North America.
Please join our team's effort today by registering to walk or by making a donation. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will save lives today. Be sure to check our team Web site frequently to see our progress, and thanks for your support!
