Welcome to Team Cancer Fighting Cowgirl's Fundraising Page

Ride On
Sep 12, 2017

For the third year in a row, a group of us are taking part in this year's Light the Night Walk in Tucson, Arizona to honor our friend, Betsy Batish. In the dark of the desert night, we'll hold up lanterns, say her name, and curse cancer for taking her at age 36, a mere 11 months after her out-of-the-blue diagnosis of a very rare and agressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Betsy was a writer, photojournalist and legit Rodeo Queen. She jumped horses and then took amazing photographs of them (see above for my favorite). She was also an Air Force wife, a bond all of us on Team Cancer-Fighting Cowgirl share. Being part of a military community is a funny thing. It gives you a family you never asked for, but which you come to love as much as your closest, oldest friends. It is a network of ongoing support, encouragement, understanding and wine. For that, and so many more reasons, we continue this fight for Betsy long after she could here.

In addition to walking we're also raising money because, besides horrendously toxic drugs, money is the only thing that cancer understands (cancer is akin to a street thug, apparently). With money, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) can support the research of blood cancer treatments.

Your donations in previous years have helped fund CAR-T immunotherapy treatment — the first gene therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration — which came to fruiition this year. CAR-T uses a patient's own immune system to kill cancer in a completely genius way I can't even begin to explain well, but you should click that link to read more about it. The LLS has invested $40 million in this treatment over the last 20 years. Many children and young adults who were out of options and who received this treatment as part of a clinical trial are now in remission.

Our hope is that, in some small way, we help contribute to the eventual end of these stupid types of cancers that take away our friends. Please consider making a donation to our team — any amount is significant — or come walk with us on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. here in Tucson. All are welcome.

Thank you for your continued support friends and family!

(Our lovely friend doing what she did best.)
