Kareem’s Story

In 2008, Los Angeles Lakers legend and UCLA Bruin alumnus Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spoke with a trainer about symptoms he was experiencing. He visited a physician and was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia, CML for short, a slow-progressing blood cancer.

Kareem lost a close friend to leukemia not long before his own diagnosis, and was scared he may be facing the same fate. Fortunately, his son was in medical school at the time and was able to educate Kareem about his diagnosis and treatment options.

He scheduled regular doctor visits, got his blood tested every three months, and took his medicine as directed.

A former professional athlete, Kareem continues to stay active and exercise regularly… and encourages patients to “stay positive… and lean on your support network. "

Having been a professional athlete, Kareem continues to stay active and exercise regularly. “Stay positive, get all the facts and lean on your support network – family, friends, whatever. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, because it is there for you. Most importantly, listen to your doctor and follow whatever treatment regimen he gives you. Don’t try to improvise with your medicines. This is not jazz music – it’s your life!” said Jabbar.

Kareem states, “I learned that I am stronger than I think and that by sharing my story with others I may be able to help them as well. We are all human beings and cancer is truly non-discriminant, but with real community there is real strength.”

Thanks to dedicated people like you, funds raised from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Light The Night Walk help support the research of blood cancer treatments that save lives.

Without your efforts, LLS could not fund the research of such treatments as targeted therapies that zero in on cancer cells and kill them or immunotherapy drugs that use a patient's own immune system to kill cancer.
