Remaining relentless for the cure.
Oct 04, 2011

I am alive because of fundraisers like these.

The day I was diagnosed, I got a pedicure.

What else was I supposed to do? Having a pity party for myself wouldn't make it go away. Screaming and being angry wouldn't shrink the tumors. So I got a pedicure and, with the help of my incredible friends, rallied myself for what lied ahead.

While people were scheduling holiday parties and spring break, I was scheduling bi-weekly chemo appointments. The next 6 months were a challenge, but I made it through - coming out the other side with a knowledge of the strength I never knew I had, and a fabulous new wig.

The day I was rediagnosed, I took my dog to the park.

It was 10 short months since I had returned to school, and that day was significantly more difficult to rally myself than the first time, but I had beat it once, I could do it again.

The next year was a roller coaster of doctors, drugs, treatments, surgeries, drugs, hospitals, and drugs. With lots of scrapbooking and sleeping in between. I was declared in remission after a vicious battle, and had remained so until last year.

In June of 2010 I found out the cancer had returned. I am currently undergoing treatment and there is no doubt in my mind that with the help of my incredible support system I will beat this cancer once and for all!!

I am lucky.

I am lucky because during the three years that I was in remission, the advances in treatment have been immense. I am able to continue normal activities with minimal side effects, a large change from previous treatments I have undergone.

I am lucky for my amazing support system of friends and family. I am not ashamed to admit that without them, I would not have been able to beat this.

I am lucky because I was first stricken with this disease in 2004, when the survival rate had risen 74% since 1975.

Today, Hodgkins Lymphoma is one of the most curable cancers. Is that because the disease got weaker? No, it's because the fight against blood cancers is stronger.

I am alive today because of fundraisers like this, and people like you, who donated their money which enabled the advances in research and increased the survival rate from 40%, a short 40 years ago, to 86% today.

Although the advances have been great, the battle against blood cancers is ongoing. Every four minutes someone new is diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma; while every ten minutes someone loses their battle.

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's evening walk and fundraising event. It is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to thousands of people battling blood cancers and to commemorate loved ones lost.

Please make a donation and join me and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in our mission to cure all blood cancers.

I am living proof of the work that LLS is doing, and how the CRUCIAL dollars raised towards research are improving the quality of life and treatment options for cancer patients. But there is still MUCH work to do, and many patients who are not as lucky as me. With your donations, we become one step closer to finding a cure. EVERY dollar helps. Thank you for your support and joining me in being relentless for a cure!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support.
