Why I Walk
Oct 19, 2017

In 2008 my husband, Rich, was diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive Stage IV lymphoma called Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma. Because this type of lymphoma is so rare, doctors around the world still don't have a standardized treatment and he had limited options. Four out of five people who get this type of cancer die within five years (many much sooner).

After months of tests, hospital visits and consultations, Rich was accepted into a research protocol at the NIH's National Cancer Institute and underwent 650 hours of experimental chemotherapy over 5 months. Because of his participation in this research, not only was he part of helping doctors move one step closer to a cure, he was CANCER-FREE for over 5 years with no recurrence since his treatment and on March 13, 2014 the doctors told him he is considered CURED!

Thanks to amazing cancer research that works, amazing medical care, and amazing family and friends...progress is being made. However, the fight against cancer is still raging on. Even if you haven’t had to deal with a blood cancer, chances are you, a loved one or someone you know has been touched by some form of cancer. “Light the Night” is a chance to make a difference.

On Friday, October 13, 2017 our family participated in the National Capital Area's "Light the Night" walk -- the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's evening walk and fundraising event --joining in with hundreds of thousands of others around the globe to raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services. The hope, courage and strength of the blood cancer community was out in full force for the walk.

We have three other amazing cancer survivors on our team, a family member who beat prostate cancer, another team member who is alive today because of a miracle "pill a day" blood cancer treatment (a treatment funded by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!), and another team member who beat blood cancer!

We are driven to support this walk by the desire to have Rich’s survival story become a reality for others. I am asking for your help to support “Team Zavadowski” to hit our fund-raising commitment. With your help, we are saving lives because of the donations people like you have made so that people like Rich can continue to live and enjoy life with family & friends.

LLS funded advances are helping patients, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed.

The Northern Virginia walk is completed but we are still accepting donations for this year until December 31st. It's not too late to donate and help save lives.

The easiest way to support "Team Zavadowski"… click "Donate Now" on the right-hand side of this page.  ANY amount makes a difference in supporting this to research and care. Choose whatever option works best for you and join others supporting this all-important event.

Your generosity is deeply appreciated. Thank you sincerely for your support!!

God Bless You,

Mary Ann
