Welcome to My Light The Night Walk Fundraising Page

Hello everyone! I am thrilled to be participating again in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Light The Night Walks - this being my 6th year with Team Zavadowski. When I first heard of their remarkable story [along with so many other stories] in their fight against blood cancers, I just had to get involved and join in the cause!

But this year will be a very special walk for me - I'll be walking for my paternal grandmother, Gloria C Gallant, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) this past June, shortly after her 90th birthday. Always being the active type and refusing to let the diagnosis get her down, my grandmother and other family members sought suitable treatment for her disease. After visiting the Leukemia Center at Mass General Hospital in Boston (where additional tests confirmed she has AML), she was encouraged to undergo hypo-methylating treatment. This form of treatment disrupts the replication of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow so the body can produce normal cells. This therapy is among the many treatments that have been approved in recent years thanks to research and funding by LLS.

To date, my grandmother has undergone three rounds (every 28 days) of treatment, with a fourth round scheduled in mid-October. Following the fourth round, she will return to Mass General for tests to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. Those tests will determine whether further treatments are warranted.

Like many cancer patients, she experiences fatigue and tries to avoid becoming anemic. She has had several blood transfusions for low red blood cell counts. On balance, she has been responding well to the treatments and tries to remain physically active every day. Her motto of "waking up every day with a purpose" has enabled her to maintain a positive outlook. With continued progress, the hope is that she will defeat this disease!

So I'm walking and fundraising this year to pay tribute to her, as well as bring hope to the countless others who are battling blood cancers! Please consider making a donation in support of this live-saving cause!

For more than 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been solely focused on people with blood cancers. Presently, they have more than $250 million committed to research across the United States and in ten other countries. Every dollar is provided by concerned donors. We invest in the best, outcome based science:

  • Anywhere, with no geographic or institutional boundaries
  • Without profit incentive
  • To meet unmet medical needs of people with blood cancers

Please click on "Donate Now" if you want to make a donation. ANY amount makes a difference, and you'll join hundreds of thousands of people supporting this all-important event!

OR, if you'd like to join Team Zavadowski for the LTN Walk on October 13th in Reston Town Center and be part of a special team, click "WALK WITH US" at the top of the page!

Kind in mind, LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

  • A donation of $30 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
  • A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Remember, we all know someone who has been affected by cancer. With "Light the Night", it's our chance to "walk the talk" and make a difference.

Please make a donation to support my participation in the Light The Night Walk and help save lives. Be sure to check my Web site frequently to see the team's progress, and thanks for your support!
