Cancer is a horrible disease. It affects millions every day, yet, the day I found out my godmother was diagnosed with leukemia, I was floored and devastated. I never expected the warm-hearted woman that took me in as a foster child to have to go through this. Her diagnosis was polycythemia vera, a form of leukemia where there is an over abundance of red blood cells. Each month she has to get phlebotomy done to see where her red blood cell counts are. If they are too high, the blood becomes too viscous, so she has to get a pint of blood removed. I can't imagine it's a pleasant experience. Tweaking chemotherapy to be at the right levels is an arduous task, so I can only imagine there's only so long you can keep your spirits up. Yet, through every ordeal and obstacle she has come to, she's always smiling. You have to understand, she is not just my godmother to me. She's also been my foster mother, my friend, my guardian angel, and also a warrior. Every time leukemia has thrown her a punch, she's fought back with honor and grace. I decided on Thursday, September 11th, which is a dark day, an anniversary of a terrible time in our country's history, to do something good, to remember the day for something wonderful as well: I created a team, Team Barbara, to walk this year in the Light the Night Walk, and people are still joining. This is now 4 days later, and we've already raised $560, which is incredible. In donating, not only are you donating towards future breakthroughs in fighting two horrific blood cancers, you're also giving hope that someday, we will erraticate leukemia and lymphoma. Out of respect for my godmother, I keep more recent photos off of social media and the rest of the internet, but instead I chose one of my prized photographs. This is me sitting with Aunt Barbara on my first birthday. The boy on the right of the photo was later to become my brother when I was adopted and one of my best friends. Thank you to all who have and will donate in the future.
