Our Second Year!
Sep 05, 2013 by Alyssa Dowlen

We are back this year to walk again with Light the Night, and we are absolutely thrilled!

I can personally say that Light the Night last year was such an AMAZING experience. It was overwhelming, to say the least, to see how many people are affected by this disease. I remember walking around, looking at all of the tents and having to stop, overcome with tears. There were so many "In Memory of" and "In Honor of" pictures...too many to keep track of. I didn't expect to feel so emotional at seeing them.

We all know someone, to some degree, that is affected by cancer. Whether it is a direct connection, or someone who knows someone. This disease is life changing...it changed my life, my family's life, so dramatically.

We are about a year and half into life without Mom. For me, starting a new journey in teaching, and knowing this year will be full of many things, like moving out, getting engaged, and getting married, makes for a bittersweet feeling. Every single day on my drive home, I want to call my mom. I want to tell her about my job, my kids, Branden's work, the dogs, Dad, etc etc etc. This feeling is some days overbearing, and somedays just a twinge. It is a feeling that I would never wish on anyone.

I walk because I hope that one day, there is a generation, that doesn't feel the sting of a loss of someone they love to cancer. To Leukemia.

I walk because I know it makes a difference.

I walk because it could change a life.

I walk because it honors the life my mom lived before she was taken from us. It helps us connect to those that loved her, and there were so many people that loved her.

My favorite part of the night last year, was when we all lifted our balloons...first in honor of those who died, then in honor of the survivors present, and finally, in honor of supporters and friends. I cannot wait to once again stand in the dark, in the middle of Dallas, and see hundreds of ballons rise for hope.

Please consider joining our team and walking with us this year. We would love to see everyone that mom knew, and spend time walking with you!

If you can't join us, please consider making a donation. We would love for every person on our team to raise $100, so that we can all carry balloons and wear LLS shirts.

This year is especially meaningful to our family, not only because it begins a new tradition for us, but also because Mom is being honored as the North Texas Dallas Memorial Hero. You can view her biography here: https://www.lightthenight.org/ntx/localchapter/patients

Thank you, and we REALLY hope to see you on October 27th!

Welcome to my Light The Night Walk Team homepage.

Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual fundraising walk to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. Hundreds of thousands of participants raise funds for lifesaving research and patient services.

For more than 60 years, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been solely focused on people with blood cancers. Presently, we have more than $250 million committed to research across the United States and in ten other countries. Every dollar is provided by concerned donors. We invest in the best, outcome based science:

  • Anywhere, with no geographic or institutional boundaries
  • Without profit incentive
  • To meet unmet Medicare needs of people with blood cancers

And LLS funded advances are helping patients beyond those for whom they were originally developed, including people with solid tumors and auto-immune diseases. In the past decade, nearly 50% (19 out of 39) of the cancer drugs approved by the FDA were approved as treatments for blood cancer patients. Twelve are already approved for people beyond those for whom they were first developed. With your help, we are saving lives.

  • A donation of $30 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
  • A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
  • A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
  • A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

Please join our team's effort today by registering to walk or by making a donation. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will help save lives. Be sure to check our team Web site frequently to see our progress, and thanks for your support!
