Why We Walk~Katie
Sep 01, 2015 by Katie Lockwood

Welcome to our page, and thank you so much for visiting! For those of you who don't know us personally, our team has many reasons why we participate in Light the Night. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month and in Honor of it, we are going to share some of the reasons why our team walks in Light the Night.

Katie, our team captain, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma in February 2014. She is the wife of Mikey Long and mother of 3 year old Cooper. She and Mikey are also active duty Navy. Katie completed the standard course of treatment from March-September 2014. Unfortunately her follow up scan showed only partial response to the treatment. In the meantime, Katie served as the 2014 Virginia Beach Light the Night Walk Honored Hero. After finding out she was not in remission, she started another course of treatment in November that unfortunately did not work either. In December, Katie began Brentuximab in hopes that it would get her to remission so that she could proceed with a stem cell transplant which would give her the greatest chances of getting rid of the Hodgkin's. Thankfully, Katie was able to achieve a clear scan in January 2015 and get the go ahead to do the stem cell transplant from a matched unrelated donor. Katie received her new stem cells and celebrated her re-birthday on March 31, 2015 at the University of Duke Hospital. She spent about seven weeks in the hospital, and another two months in close vicinity to Duke, before being able to return home at the end of June. Since then, she has worked on physically recovering and spending missed time with her son, family, and friends.

Welcome to Our Light The Night Walk Team Fundraising Page

Thanks to dedicated people like you, funds raised from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Light The Night Walk help support the research of blood cancer treatments that save lives.

The Light The Night Walk brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases, and our team is helping to shine a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Without your efforts LLS could not fund the research of such treatments as targeted therapies that zero in on cancer cells and kill them or immunotherapy drugs that use a patient's own immune system to kill cancer.

Friends, families and co-workers form fundraising teams, and millions of consumers help by donating at retail outlets. These efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in over 200 communities across North America each fall.

Please join our team's effort today by registering to walk or by making a donation. Your participation in the Light The Night Walk will save lives not someday, but today.

Be sure to check our team Web site frequently to see our progress!

Thank you for bringing us all closer to living in a world without blood cancers!
